THE DANGERS OF DRIVING DRUNK

by
Micky McKeon

This is a bone-chiseling, sweat-dissolving tale of horror and death.  And it is all a result of Shane Sodder getting inebriated, and then operating his motor vehicle.  Yes, I speak of Drunk Driving!  Because he had an important lunch meeting the day after his alcohol-keg party, Shane said that he had to drive home, despite the law forbidding it because of his four alcoholic beverages consumed in two hours.  His judgement impaired, his coordination slowed, he took off in his Volvo, unaware of the existence of little Annie Ridell, who lived two blocks away.  Following another stern taste of her father's belt earlier that night, Annie decided she was to run away from home, and never look back.  She was ready to cross the street, unable to see peripherally to her left because of the massive swelling in her eye.  Coincidentally, Shane was rounding the bend at that exact same time, on that exact same street.  Annie took one tragic step forward, and at the last moment, gazed into the glazed-over eyes of Shane Sodder.  That gaze lasted eternally, for that night, Annie Ridell and Shane Sodder fell in love, and twelve years later, they were married.  Until death did them part, when Annie, raised to accept and expect a life of beatings, beat Shane to his bloody death.  Had Shane not driven home that one night, might everything have ended differently for the brash drunkard?  Most certainly yes.  NEVER drink and drive.
