DISCOVERY OF THE KISS

by
Micky McKeon

Adrianna drew nearer to Meron, as if gravity now worked horizontally instead of vertically. The attraction, which would be considered magnetic thousands of years later, when magnetism would be discovered, was stronger betwixt Adrianna and Meron than any other pair the clan had ever witnessed. Complete physical, mental, and emotional intertwining existed between the two lovers, and though polygamy was not only accepted, but encouraged, they remained loyal and true to each other.
Meron was prepared to press his cheek to hers, and Adrianna had the same romantic intention. But something went horribly right. They were so in tune to each other, they both turned their heads in the same direction, at exactly the same time- their eyes closed in overwhelming passion, and their lips slightly parted with a silent declaration of their love. Instead of their cheeks together pressed, it was their lips that met, and created the first kiss in the world. No, the first kiss was not created; it was discovered. It existed before humans, before atoms, and before God. But it was Adrianna and Meron who discovered it.
Adrianna was mesmerized, an icy electrical current shot down her spine then back up to her eyeballs. Similar to the lightning that coursed Ben Franklin's kite-line when he discovered electricity, similar lightning was quickly filling Adrianna to the point of paralysis. She could not move a muscle.
Meron was also mesmerized, but for a frightfully different reason. Rumor had coursed through the village of a succubus in its midst, loving pour citizens into their early graves. Surely, this was the very same beast, attempting to devour him, lips first. Fear momentarily froze Meron, then his warrior training returned his consciousness and his mobility. With a banshee-shriek, he reached into his sheath, withdrew its blade, and removed her lips (along with the head-attached) from his. Her body, now a foot shorter then it was yesterday, fell to the ground next to hear head, motionless.
To this day, there is nothing more dangerous, that can elicit more irrational fear, than a kiss.
